Arkansas Governor Signs Bill Reinstating Voter ID Law

Arkansas' governor has signed a measure requiring voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot, reinstating a voter ID law that was struck down by the state's highest court more than two years ago.

Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Friday signed the measure, which allows voters without photo ID to cast a provisional ballot if they sign a sworn statement.

The law is similar to a voter ID requirement enacted in 2013 that was struck down by the state Supreme Court the following year as unconstitutional. The proposal is aimed at addressing some justices' argument that the requirement needed at least two-thirds support in the Legislature to be enacted.

Arkansas lawmakers earlier this month voted to put a proposed constitutional amendment imposing the requirement on next year's ballot.
